On a new file, it’s possible to bring Gustave and Kelvin (and even solo Gustave) to the Ghoul Tower in Laubholz and fight the Megalith Beast in Weissland. There are timeline shenanigans involved, but they’re not as complicated as you’d think. It’s more like a possibility that gets overlooked because the game by default (with no SF2 save data detected on the memory card) starts with Gustave’s story and most players will stick with his scenarios instead of switching to Wil right away.
What I did was play only through Wil’s Scenario and didn’t switch to Gustave until Laubholz was unlocked after [Tycoon Wil]. Clearing [Wil’s Departure] unlocks [Gustave 15 Years Old], so you don’t even need to play the early Gustave Scenarios unless you want to unlock [Gustave and the Blacksmith] for a real challenge.
The shortest, most direct route:
It should theoretically be possible to go to Laubholz with solo Gustave after [Mother’s Sickbed], [Conquest of Wide], and [Gustave and the Pirates], but I haven’t tested this out yet.
If you wanna try it out yourself, here are some notes to make Ghoul Tower less of a nightmare. This is assuming that you’ll be going directly to Laubholz/Weissand after [Tycoon Wil] without playing further Wil Scenarios.
Now’s the time to have Wil spark some spells. At the very least, get [ Firestorm] and [
Incineration] now to make your life easier. Tyler can learn [
Guard Beast] now or Kelvin can get it later.
When you’re done grinding, might as well pick up all the Quells while you’re at it: < Amber Maleate>, <
Pocket Dragon>, and <
Kris Knife>.
Optional: Get < Stone Plate> and/or <
Dead Stone> from the Skeletons. Have Wil spark [
Sonic Poison] and [
Regenerate] since Kelvin can’t learn them after battles.
See if you can pick up at least one < Funny Cap> from the Grass Dancers if you’re going to Weissland later. This area can be revisited if you go to Vogelang after [Tycoon Wil].
Nothing really interesting of note.
Pick up optional items in the Valley of Mist if you want. Make sure to keep the < Ice Lance> for Kelvin.
You can find Grass Dancers here, too, if you haven’t gotten a < Funny Cap>.
Now’s the time to grind for a bit to get two < Crystal Wings> to save your sanity later. Upon entering the first map of the Glacier, one bird sprite will always aggro and the encounters will always be with Polar Drakes, so this is the best grinding spot. Go heal at the Weissland bar as needed.
Then pick up the rest of the items in the Ice Megalith. At least get the < Green Glass>, <
Glacier Shield>, <
Beast Lance>, and <
Night Medallion>*.
*Make sure your inventory isn’t full before going to the central room of the Ice Megalith, otherwise you’ll miss the < Night Medallion> altogether.
Visit at least one town to unequip items for Gustave and Kelvin since they won’t have access to Item Retrieval NPCs at this point.
Important items: < Crystal Wings> x2, <
Ice Lance>, <
Beast Lance>, <
Green Glass>, <
Stone Plate>, <
Dead Stone>, <
Night Medallion>, <
Glacier Shield>, <
Steel Armor> (stolen from Patrick), <
Funny Cap>
Optional: Go to Gruegel or Vogelang to convert extra items to Chips, if you’re going to continue this file after the shenanigans.
If you want to tackle Ghoul Tower with both Gustave and Kelvin, pick [Gustave 15 Years Old].
If you want solo Gustave after leveling with Kelvin, you can go to Laubholz after [Gustave and the Blacksmith], [Mother’s Sickbed], [Conquest of Wide], or [Gustave and the Pirates].
If you want a real challenge…pick [Gustave and the Blacksmith] without doing other Gustave scenarios.
Go kick the giant mushroom, not for the < Mushroom Tear>, but for the infinitely spawning Fungman fights. It sure beats entering and exiting the map. This is the easiest place to start gaining HP, WP, and SP.
It’s also worth investing in Martial Arts for Gustave. Since he’s stuck with the < Trial Dagger>, even a single [
Punch] can outdamage a regular [
Slash]. Forget Gustave the Steel–he’s the Fist of the East Continent.
Spend some time here sparking arts in Duels if you want, since, if you don’t go to Vogelang, it’ll be the only opportunity to do so before Ghoul Tower. (You can Duel the Anima Ghoul, but by then it’s a moot point.) [Fang Crush] can still take out your LP even if it does minimal damage, so watch out.
If you have a < Stone Plate>, equip it on the person Dueling the Gremlin to avoid unfortunate mishaps with [Petra Pray]. (I’d never even seen that attack before because Gustave usually crushes Gremlins before they get to do anything…)
This is the only time you can freely walk through Jade, by the way. Pick up the PocketStation node if you want, but who actually has a PocketStation outside of Japan?
...I do.
After clearing [Gustave 15 Years Old] or [Gustave and the Blacksmith], Gruegel will be the only town that can be selected from the map, but don’t be fooled! Go to and exit Gruegel, then Laubholz, Weissland, and Vogelang suddenly appear
At this point, you can gain more levels at the Rocky Area outside Vogelang, go to Laubholz for Ghoul Tower, or fight the Megalith Beast in Weissland.
Shops, Chip Conversion, a bar to rest at… This place has got everything!
Here’s another chance to get a < Funny Cap> from Grass Dancers for the Megalith Beast fight.
The Duels here will generally have a higher spark rank than the Gremlin (looking at you, Horn Buffalo), so this is a second opportunity to learn more Arts and Spells.
If there are three plant sprites around the small pool when you enter the canyon, go south, then northeast. The plant sprite on the right is a guaranteed Land Urchin fight. When it’s not being dangerous, you can spark some of those really fun Arts. If Gustave and Kelvin get beat up real bad, they can always go back to Vogelang for healing.
…I think I might have been having too much fun sparking arts here, though. Kelvin learned all the Spear Arts and most of the spells, and Gustave turned into the Fist of the East Continent… I’m pretty sure that we’re ready for Ghoul Tower now, but I want to see if I can get Eradication first. In the meanwhile…
Aaaand here we are at last. The Ghouls conveniently drop Crowns and there’s an inn, so you can infinitely grind levels. Too bad you can’t convert items into Chips here, though.
Remember the < Crystal Wings> we got earlier? Equip those now to save a lot of headache when fighting the Ghouls. Sonic Immunity is a blessing here.
Did you train Gustave in Martial Arts? I did, and this happened.
The quick list of steps to accomplish things are as follows:
Good news! I finally got around to recording the shenanigans at Ghoul Tower!
If you didn’t get the < Crystal Wings> for Ghoul Tower and haven’t gone to Laubholz yet, now’s the time to get them. It’ll be more difficult this time with only two party members instead of four.
If you don’t have a < Funny Cap> or the <
Night Medallion>, well…
I’ll update this section later after I clear Ghoul Tower.
