A port town that inherited technology from the Hahn Empire

Overview of the City of Night

“City of Night” is a nickname, of course. Hahn era technology still functions here today, such as the street lights. Because of this, some shops are open all night, unlike other places where everyone goes home to sleep when it gets dark. This kind of city is paradise for miners from the Svendorf Mines in the north. The mountain men sing, drink, and spend all their wages here. Schwarzmadchen, the city’s full name, refers to ladies and playing in the night. This “Pleasure Quarter of the Night” eventually came to be known by the shortened “City of Night”. Nowadays, even the locals use the nickname instead of the official name. The men of the sea also frequent this town, spending several days here depending on conditions of the sea around Grand Valley. Like the mountain men, they too are coaxed out of their wages. This city that revolves around services is rare in Sandail indeed. The number of permanent residents is by no means small, but nowhere near the crowds that appear at night. It was most likely the open-minded spirit of the southern countries nearby which gave rise to this kind of city.

As mentioned before, technology from the Hahn Empire is still used in the city. The street lights are the obvious example, but there is also a water supply system. Though the city seems rough on the surface, the sanitary conditions are fairly good and there are few epidemics. This is the other key to the large population. The city benefits from these systems, but unfortunately, no one would be able to fix them if they ever broke down. Quell researchers living there have yet to unravel the secrets of this technology.

This town is one of the few which can manufacture Tools, owing to the presence of Hahn era technology. Chip collection sites are located on the outskirts of town, where even children aid in work efforts.

Climate

The weather here is hot because of its location in the subtropics. Hurricanes ravage the area from here southwards to Laubholz and the people are trying to develop countermeasures. The city streets are left scarred by the hurricanes, a testament to their power.

An Isolated City

The city is wedged between two major obstacles, the Great Forest to the north and Grand Valley to the south. Thus, it is no easy feat reaching the city via land. The only major road to the city runs from the Svendorf Mines. Sailors are well aware of the stormy seas and rough currents along sea routes in the region, so the city can only be reached this way during favorable weather conditions. Supposedly, there was much trade with Laubholz as people crossed the stone bridges at Grand Valley and headed for the northern part of the Eastern Continent. If people were once again allowed to travel as freely, then the City of Night could potentially become one of the world’s largest cities.

A City with an Unusual Layout

The City of Night has a complex layout, but can be roughly divided into Uptown and Downtown. Uptown is mostly residential while Downtown hosts the pleasure quarter. Only the Downtown area existed during the Hahn Empire, but as the population grew, houses started to be built in the Uptown area. But in truth, the real cause for the chaotic layout is that the city was never built according to any plans.

This is the central Downtown area. Young girls with provocative smiles stand outside the pleasure houses. Men of dubious character can also be seen lurking in the shadows.

Essential Items from the Pleasure Quarter

These items are so famous that they can be called specialty products of the pleasure quarter. Tool manufacturing has flourished in recent years, though less conspicuous. The latter is supported by resonant stones mined from Svendorf Mines in the north and Hahn era technologies present in the city. The Tools produced here are of similar quality to those from Vogelang, though few appear on the market because of limited distribution channels.

The region is self sufficient, but the tropical fruits grown here are especially delicious. These fruits are grown by residents on their own small-scale farms. Though only surplus produce is brought to the pleasure quarter, there are many who travel from afar to taste these legendary fruits.

Local Specialties from the City of Night

Fruits such as mango, durian, and passion fruit are grown by and shared among the locals. If ships were able to regularly call upon the port, then these fruits would definitely be a popular export.
