The mysterious artifacts called Quells
brought the power of “Spells” to mankind.
Though “artifact” may not be the right word
since Quells weren’t crafted by human hands.
However, they clearly weren’t created through natural phenomena.
Along with the mysterious Megalith structures,
they were creations left behind by the advanced civilization
that existed before the rise of the human race.

There were definitely indigenous people who existed and built civilizations before the appearance of humans. The exact dates are unknown, but their civilization collapsed long before the birth of the human race. Only speculations can be made based on the Megaliths and Quells left behind mainly on the Eastern Continent. These mysterious objects and structures are the only remnants of that indigenous civilization, but provide no insight as to their outward appearance or lifestyle. No direct comparisons can be made with the current Spell Culture citizens of Sandail.
The “Egg” that appears in the game is a special Quell created by one of these indigenous people who wanted to attempt their own revival, but this was thwarted by Tycoon Wil and his descendants.
Megaliths and Quells, the legacy of the indigenous people, existed long before their discovery by humans. According to history, the discovery of the first Quell in Weissland is identified as the origin of Spell Culture. Certainly, other discoveries could have been made on a more personal level any number of years before or after this event. It’s just that the event in Weissland was significant enough to change the course of human history. In fact, Megaliths were difficult to approach because of the Monsters living in close proximity. There are events in the game where we see Quells and Megaliths cause Anima to run wild and transform people into Monsters. With this in mind, and taking into consideration that many adventurers disappeared on their expeditions, of course there would be other discoveries going unrecorded in history.
For the moment, suppose that the indigenous people had created Megaliths and Quells for the purpose of guiding the next generation of intelligent life on the path toward developing Spell Culture… The existence of a society and culture with strong Anima for casting strong Spells seems like a perfect environment for the Egg. So would it be too much of a stretch to say that all the Megaliths and Quells were created to lay the groundwork for the Egg’s revival…?
Quells— the mysterious objects that brought Spells to mankind. People use them as “Tools”, but their intended purpose is unknown. Quells are used by the general populace in the era when the game takes place, but in the distant past, they were a symbol of power that could only be owned by the privileged. They contain the same Anima used for regular Spells, but many Quells have types of Anima which have yet to be identified.
Megaliths are structures whose purpose is even more inexplicable than Quells. They have the same property as Quells to affect Anima and are dangerous to approach without caution. Aside from the ones that appear in the game, Megaliths can come in all shapes and sizes. Most have already been explored, but there are still many that have yet to be discovered. Countless monsters live inside and around the Megaliths.
